Has The Well Run Dry?

Welcome to My Green Vermont - A Blog by Eulalia Benejam Cobb.

At least for now, I think it has.

I\’ve always believed that there\’s no such thing as writer\’s block; that the more you write, the more you CAN write, and so on. But for the last couple of days, as I\’ve mentally looked around to find something to write about, there\’s been nothing. Or nothing worthwhile, anyway (that\’s the Critic speaking up, I know) .

I\’m coated in a sort of gluey, translucent layer of indifference. So what if I never write again? So what if I never make another drawing? Everything seems like such an effort…
sigh,
yawn,
fade to black.

  1. sometime you just need time off…and suddenly you are back at it without realizing how much you have to say…Jaimie

  2. I love the description of writers block as gluey and translucent. I myself have never had the pleasure of writers block. I type in my sleep. Not sayin it's good stuff all the time, but the words are always, always there. Here, I'll send you some.

  3. If it becomes problematic, try writing about nothing, or at least little nothings. The woman in line ahead of you at the grocery store. The feel of an evening breeze after a hot day. Pick a random item on your desk–an old battered mug, a bookmark, a bottle of vitamins, a sock (what's that doing on my desk??)–and write the first blather that comes into your mind. It's amazing how quickly the very ordinary things become what your Critic calls \”worthwhile.\”

  4. Dona and Jaimie, you're right–the dog days of summer seem to have hit early this year.Bridgett, oh lucky, lucky you! Typing in your sleep…I bet that yields some interesting material.Laurie, thanks for the adorable haiku. Come to think of it, it's probably the ideal genre for blocked writers.Craig, the sock on my desk–now THAT could keep me going for yours.
