Could Someone Explain About Leggings?

Welcome to My Green Vermont - A Blog by Eulalia Benejam Cobb.

I am not against leggings.  In fact, I own several pair.  But I\’m not sure I understand their raison d\’etre.

In winter one wears leggings and socks inside boots, but in that case, why not just wear a pair of warm tights?

I like the look of leggings and sockless feet in flats, but if it\’s chilly enough to cover my legs I probably need something to cover my feet, too.

In warm weather, some women wear leggings under dresses, but it seems odd to encase one\’s legs in lycra when the point of a summer dress is to let air circulate.

The logic of leggings escapes me.  What have I missed?

  1. I suppose mostly I wear leggings instead of tights because tights are too transparent. And when I wear them a long top \”dress like\” item it's because its a tunic sort of thing, too short for tights.

  2. Us tall and skinny people have a hard time with tights. Leggings stay where they ae supposed to be. Also, I use leggings to get extra wear out of summer dresses in the cooler spring and fall months.

  3. In leggings you can kick your shoes off and pad around barefoot without wearing them out, but I suspect the appeal isn't as pragmatic as that. It might be the association with dancers, who wear footless tights for better traction.

  4. i do not have the body, or the legs, for leggings. if i were a paranoid person, i would say the purpose of leggings is to make me feel bad.
